LG Optimus Black vs HTC Desire S

We compare two of 2011′s most promising up and comers, the HTC Desire S and LG’s Optimus Black

The HTC Desire S and LG’s Optimus Black have generated a lot of positive buzz this year so we felt it was time to let the two devices duke it out for bragging rights. But which of these powerful mid-range devices will emerge victorious?

Form & Build
LG Optimus Black – 122 x 64 x 9.2 mm, 109g
HTC Desire S – 115 x 59.8 x 11.6 mm, 130g

LG isn’t known for being the paragon of aesthetically pleasing design, but the Korean firm has got things right with the Optimus Black. The device is slim, crafted of premium materials and feels comfortable and well balanced in-hand, as well as looking eye-catching enough to show-off to your mates.

The HTC Desire S looks every bit the evolution of the HTC smartphone. It features nice, curved edges, reassuring weight and top quality materials as well as being comfortable to hold and easy to operate with one hand and while it may not be ground-breaking in its appearance the device looks good too!

Winner – HTC Desire S

Display
The LG Optimus Black features a 4-inch IPS LCD capacitive screen which provides bright, clear and sharp images which will please even the most pernickety smartphone devotee. Colours are rich and vivid too, and when you factor in the device’s price point it’s easy to be very impressed by the Optimus Black in this round.

The HTC Desire S features a fairly common or garden 3.7-inch S-LCD display which, while it won’t win many awards, does provide a good, high standard of performance. Colours are vivid and pleasing, blacks are fairly deep and the screen is responsive and durable thanks to the inclusion of Gorilla Glass. It just isn’t anything to write home about.

Winner – LG Optimus Black

Optics
The LG Optimus Black features a solid 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, geo-tagging & face and smile detection, as well as 720p video capture and performance across the board is at worst good and at best excellent. Users that rely on video-calling will be pleased to note the inclusion of a 2-megapixel front-facing camera too.

HTC has fitted the Desire S with the same camera as its predecessor, which is both pleasing and disappointing. Images are clear and sharp and the included image stabilisation is a boon but don’t expect great results when shooting indoors in low-light, as the flash sometimes proves a little overwhelming.
