HTC Flyer vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
We compare the HTC Flyer to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9
We set the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 on the HTC Flyer and let them duke it out.
Form:
HTC Flyer – 195.4x122x13.2mm, 420.8g
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 – 230.9×157.8×8.6mm, 470g
For the company’s first venture into tablet territory the Flyer is not one of HTC’s most attractive devices, not only is the back panel and edging made of some rather icky looking silver plastic but there’s something a bit bulky and almost bulbous about the rear of the device too, it doesn’t look elegant to us, on top of that we think the edges around the screen are a bit big and add to the clunky feel of the Flyer.
While the Galaxy Tab is a much better looking piece of hardware it’s also by no means Samsung’s best example of visual design, like the Flyer we feel the excess bodywork round the screen seems a bit redundant and both devices would look less cumbersome if the screen hugged the edges more. On the Galaxy Tab the back panel is overall a bit basic but a redeeming feature is the interesting ‘carbon fibre’ like texture used.
We have to say between these two the Galaxy Tab comes out looking better but it’s by no means flawless and even shares a couple of oddball design features with its competitor.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
Display:
The Samsung’s display uses an 8.9-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen at 800×1280 pixels and 170 dots-per-inch (dpi). Features-wise it’s got multi-touch, accelerometer and gyro sensors and comes with the TouchWiz UX user interface (UI) pre-installed.
HTC has given the Flyer a 7-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen at 600×1024 pixels and the same dpi rating as the Samsung. The usual accelerometer and multi-touch are here along with the HTC Sense UI. The Flyer also has a couple of quirkier features too, there are the capacitive controls under the glass which rotate with the interface but it also comes with handwriting support.
We prefer the screen size and resolution of the Samsung and it matches the Flyer’s dpi.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
Processor:
The Flyer has a 1.5GHz single core Qualcomm processor on the Snapdragon chipset against the Samsung’s rather more lively dual core 1GHz processor on NVidia’s Tegra 2 chipset. While the clock speed of the Samsung may be lower the dual core processing power means the Galaxy Tab will outperform the Flyer every time.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
Storage:
HTC offer a single option on storage for the Flyer with 32 GB of internal capacity, while the Samsung comes in three variants with 16, 32 or 64 GB of onboard space, both tablets feature 1 GB of RAM and Micro SD support up to 32 GB.
The Samsung wins here not only for giving more variety but a greater maximum capacity too.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
