LG Optimus Black vs HTC Wildfire S

We send one of HTC’s old guard, the HTC Wildfire, into battle against LG’s new Optimus Black

We pitch the HTC Wildfire against LG’s new Optimus Black.

Form:
HTC Wildfire – 106.8×60.4x12mm, 118g
LG Optimus Black – 122x64x9.2mm, 109g
The LG looks like an LG, which is code for saying it looks really nice. Elegant lines, minimalist features and flattering proportions means this little shiny black slab ticks all the right boxes. It’s very thin too, substantially thinner than the Wildfire, but not the thinnest phone out there as some marketing might claim. Regardless, we like it.

The same can’t be said for the Wildfire, HTC’s design in fairness has come on leaps and bounds since the Wildfire was released a year ago but this particular handset hasn’t aged well. It’s just a bit too clunky looking with slightly squat proportions and some horrendous plastic detailing.

The difference between the two handsets shows just how much phone design has changed over not too long a timespan, and for the better it seems.

Winner – LG Optimus Black

Display:
Just like the Optimus 2X the Optimus Black uses a 4-inch IPS LCD Nova capacitive touchscreen at 480×800 pixels and 233 pixels-per-inch (ppi). The handset comes preloaded with the Optimus 2.0 user interface (UI) and the Gesture user interface 2.0, other display features are minimal with just an accelerometer sensor.

The Wildfire uses a 3.2-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen at a lowly 240×320 pixels and a mere 125ppi. Feature-wise it has some things the Optimus is lacking with multi-touch input and reinforced ‘Gorilla Glass’. Other features include an optical track pad, accelerometer sensor and the pre-installed HTC Sense UI.

The Optimus has the better display in terms of picture quality with a higher resolution and dpi, it’s also larger which we find more satisfying to use, however, the sheen is taken off slightly by the absence of multi-touch, now virtually a standard feature on modern smartphones and the lack of which seems like something of a faux pas.

The Wildfire has a few additional features which are appealing but the image quality isn’t going to be up to the same standard as the LG.

Winner – LG Optimus Black

Storage:
Comparing the storage of an older phone to a brand new one is usually a fairly quick and messy affair as the modern handset will in most cases swat the competitor aside effortlessly with its vastly superior statistics.

It’s no different here, the older HTC Wildfire sports 512MB of ROM and 384MB of RAM while supporting MicroSD cards up to 32GB, compared to the LG Optimus Black which has a sizable 2GB of onboard space, much more RAM at 512MB and identical card support.

Winner – LG Optimus Black
